Directing the First Hour: Scene Management and Safety as One Chain
Senior-level scene work means ordering and justifying decisions: set boundaries, control the entry log, triage hazards, assign roles, and record each choice so the whole sequence is auditable.
Scene management starts with a perimeter drawn generously, because a boundary can be contracted later at little cost, but re-expanding a released area is hard to justify. The entry log and a single controlled approach path follow directly: every person who crosses is a potential source of added or removed trace material, and the log later accounts for who was present and when. Assign roles aloud at the start — photographer, note taker, processor for each area — so no task waits on an unspoken assumption.
Worked scenario: a first officer admits he walked to the body and back before your arrival, without touching anything he can recall. The weak response is shrugging it off as harmless. The stronger decision is to record the breach, establish his path and what he may have contacted, note it in your documentation, and adjust your trace-evidence expectations along that path. It matters because the entry log is only credible if anomalies on it are documented rather than smoothed over; an audit that surfaces the breach in your own notes costs far less than one that surfaces in testimony.

Collection Order and Packaging: Fragility Before Convenience
Sequence collection so the most fragile and most probative items are processed first, package every item separately, and let completed documentation — not outside pressure — drive what is collected when.
The order of collection is itself a decision chain: fragile and easily transferred evidence, such as trace material or unstable patterns, precedes sturdy items, and nothing is collected before it is photographed in place, measured to the sketch, and described in notes. Packaging defaults should be automatic: each item packaged separately, paper rather than plastic for most items including metal tools and biological material, because sealed plastic traps condensation; wet items handled per your protocol; and every package sealed and initialed, with the seal treated as part of the custody record.
Worked scenario: at a residential scene an officer urges you to bag a pry bar immediately because the property owner wants it returned. The mistake is complying on the spot — the tool ends up unlinked to any measured location, no photograph ties it to the door frame it was found against, and any cross-transfer was never recorded before contact. The better decision is to state the sequence aloud and hold to it: photograph with a scale, record sketch coordinates and orientation, then collect into paper, seal, and initial. An item whose original position cannot be proven loses probative value no matter what a laboratory later finds on it.

Every evidence photograph needs three links: an overall-midrange-closeup framing sequence, a measurable reference in frame, and a photo log entry tying the frame to the item, location, and conditions.
Train the three-level sequence as a reflex: an overall view establishing the area, a midrange view tying the item to a fixed reference shared with your sketch, and close-ups with and without scale. The photo log — frame number, subject, position, lighting, settings — converts a folder of images into usable testimony. Understand the reciprocal relationship between aperture and shutter speed so you can explain your settings under questioning, and bracket when exposure is uncertain. Video follows the same logic: narrated orientation passes and deliberate framing rather than continuous wandering.
Worked scenario: at night you find a footwear impression in soil beside a porch. The mistake is firing the on-camera flash straight down and moving on — flat light destroys the three-dimensional detail, and no scale in frame leaves size unverifiable. The better decision is to light the impression obliquely from low angles in several directions, place a scale in the same plane as the impression, bracket exposures, photograph before any casting or lifting, and photograph the cast afterward. Weather can degrade an impression within hours, so those scene photographs are irreplaceable originals.

Search Pattern Selection: Match the Method to Terrain and Target
Search patterns are selected, not defaulted: lanes cover open ground, a grid adds a right-angle second pass, a spiral suits one searcher around a focal point, and zones partition interiors and vehicles.
Match each method to its terrain. A lane or strip search suits large open areas, with searchers keeping even spacing along parallel paths. A grid search repeats the lane pass at a right angle, trading time for a second chance at small trace items. A spiral search works where one searcher can move continuously around a focal point with few obstacles. A zone search partitions an interior or vehicle so each searcher owns a defined, accountable sub-area.
Whatever you choose, record the pattern, direction of travel, spacing, and personnel in your notes before the search begins, because that record is what supports a defensible negative conclusion later — for example, that no additional relevant items were found after a documented two-pass grid. Search the seams between zones deliberately; unsearched boundaries are a structural gap of the zone method, and your notes should show those boundaries were covered rather than left to fall between searchers.

Sketches and Measurements: Fixing Items to a Scene That Will Change
A sketch is a relocatable record: it must reference items to fixed points through triangulation, baseline, or polar coordinates so the scene can be reconstructed even after the location changes.
Choose a measurement method deliberately. Triangulation fixes an item from two permanent reference points; a baseline fixes items along a measured line; polar coordinates fix items by distance and angle from a set station. Whichever you use, the references must be permanent features — wall corners, door frames, survey markers — not movable furniture. Add scale, a north indicator, and a legend, and preserve the rough sketch with its original measurements as the source your finished diagram is drawn from.
Worked scenario: paramedics move a couch while treating a casualty before your measurements reach that corner. The mistake is sketching the shell casing relative to the couch afterward — a reference that no longer reflects the original scene. The better decision is to measure before items are moved whenever possible, and when movement is unavoidable, record the movement event and re-anchor the casing to fixed wall corners by triangulation, noting who moved what and when. Relocatable items measured to relocatable references cannot anchor testimony later.
Reports and Ethics: Writing Observations, Not Conclusions
Reports record what you observed, measured, and did; interpretations appear only when attributed to documented training, and the IAI Code of Ethics places objectivity above advocacy for any side of a case.
Write observations and interpretations in separate registers. 'A circular reddish-brown stain approximately four centimetres across' is an observation; 'blood spattered by impact' is an interpretation that must be supported by your documented training and stated with its limits. Keep chain-of-custody entries, scene conditions, personnel, and anomalies in the report so a reader can audit your account without you in the room, and let the report, notes, sketch, and photo log cross-reference one another.
Worked scenario: a draft report states that 'the suspect forced entry through the rear door.' The mistake is importing case theory into a scene document. The better decision is to describe the tool marks you observed, note that their characteristics are consistent with levering within the limits of your training, and leave attribution to the investigation. It matters because conclusions beyond your observations and documented competence are exactly where credibility, and the ethical duty of objectivity, break down under cross-examination.
Mock Scene Rehearsal: A Rubric, a Sequence, and Readiness Checks
Rehearse the full cycle on a staged, authorized scene and score it against a written rubric; the gaps the rubric exposes, not your comfortable topics, become the remaining study list.
Practical exercise: with permission, stage a mock scene at home using a few marked objects. Run the whole cycle — boundary, entry log, photography with log, sketch with fixed references, search pattern, notes — then score yourself against a rubric. Was the boundary set before processing? Does every close-up have scale and a log entry? Do all measurements reference permanent points? Is the report observation-only? Expected first-pass findings: missing midrange frames, log entries written after the fact, and at least one measurement taken to a movable object.
A realistic preparation sequence: first, write the decision chain for each domain with a justification per step; second, drill your weakest chain daily until its justifications come out loud without notes; third, run the mock scene and score it; fourth, rebuild the study list from the rubric gaps and repeat the cycle.
